Princess Tarakanova, also known as Elizabeth Tarakanova, was a pretender to the Russian throne in the 18th century. She claimed to be the daughter of Empress Elizabeth of Russia and Count Alexei Razumovsky, although her true parentage remains uncertain.
Tarakanova's claim to the throne led to her being imprisoned by Empress Catherine the Great in the Petropavlovskaya Fortress in St. Petersburg in 1775. She was later transferred to a nunnery in Russia, where she reportedly died in 1775.
The story of Princess Tarakanova has been the subject of numerous legends and romanticized accounts, with some claiming that she was actually Anna Leopoldovna, the daughter of Empress Elizabeth and Count Razumovsky. However, historical evidence does not conclusively support these claims.
Despite the mystery surrounding her true identity, Princess Tarakanova's story has captured the imagination of many and continues to be a popular topic in Russian literature and folklore.
